Keeping Your Pet Safe
This week is the Queen‘s platinum jubilee. It’s a very important event because it marks her long years of service to the throne. There’s going to be street parties, barbecues, fireworks, and a lot of social events. However, you might find that your dog isn’t 100% up for this, in which case, you just need to make sure that you have taken some steps to keep them calm, happy, and look after them during the festive period.
Supervision is Key
Ensure that you supervise your dog around food because there are lots of common barbecue items that can cause them health problems. Chicken and rib bones, kebab sticks, onions, corn on the cob, hot coal, chocolate-based dessert, alcohol, guacamole, and discarded rubbish are all bad things for a dog to get involved with.
You can take it a step further and make sure that your dog is wearing a collar with an ID tag, check their microchip details, and keep all the doors and windows firmly closed.
Safe Spaces
A safe space will be a good idea for a dog in this period because many are nervous around strangers, and fireworks are also a regular source of anxiety. Find them somewhere quiet in the house where they can be safe.
Make sure that you take the dog out to use the bathroom early, as even a random firework can be problematic. Make sure that you keep them on the lead, but if you get them out and toileted before the real fireworks start, you’ll have a much easier time. Take a look at closing the windows and the curtains because this helps muffle all of the lights and sounds.
You can play music to try and drown out the sound of fireworks; anything with a relaxing beat will help a lot. Don’t pick anything too exciting because this might upset your dog further.
Stress-Relief Products
There are a lot of different products that you can pick from that help relieve stress and create a sense of calm.
The Thundershirt is like a weighted blanket but in t-shirt form – great for anxious pets. Obviously, you’ve got things like the Pet Remedy plug-in, and then there’s also a similar version called Adaptil.
You may also want to consider Bach Rescue Remedy for dogs or Dorwest herbs. I am a big fan of Pet remedy which comes in both a spray and plug-in diffuser
In some situations, your vet can offer anti-anxiety medication, but these are usually considered to be auxiliary to natural methods where possible.
Final Thoughts
The Platinum Jubilee is a unique event which most of us will never see again. However, that means it is important to look at what you can do to make it all work out. Looking after your pet is so important, so hopefully, you can use these tips to give them a safe, enjoyable experience.
